Here's the honest version, from a craftsman who's priced twenty years of Metro Detroit kitchens: what drives cost, what typical projects run, and the one decision that cuts the bill nearly in half.
Five decisions set ninety percent of the price.
Before any brand names or door styles, five structural decisions determine what your kitchen will cost:
- Reface or replace. The single biggest fork in the road. If your cabinet boxes are sound, refacing delivers the new-kitchen look for roughly 40–50% less than replacement. This is the decision worth a phone call before you spend anything.
- Does the layout change? Keeping the sink, stove, and refrigerator where they are keeps plumbing and electrical costs minimal. Moving them, or removing a wall for an open floor plan, adds real money and is sometimes absolutely worth it. But know that's the line item.
- Cabinet construction. Particleboard boxes with stapled joints are cheap for a reason. Maple and quality plywood cost more per box and outlast the mortgage. This is where big-box "deals" quietly cut the corner you can't see.
